Dr Sanduk Ruit receives ISA Award 2021

Ophthalmologist Dr Sanduk Ruit has been awarded with the prestigious ISA Award for Services to Humanity

What is the ISA Award?

The award was established in 2009 by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the King of Bahrain

The Isa Award is granted every two years to either individuals or organizations who have been selected through a grueling process by an expert panel of jurists

The award has been named after His Highness the Late Amir of Bahrain, Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa

This award is a gift from Bahrain to the world. It will also inspire countless young people in different parts of the world to look for innovative ways to change the world and play their role in service to humanity.

The organisation has been presenting this award since 2013. Dr Ruit is the recipient of the fifth edition of the award.

Who were the four other ISA Award Laureates?

Dr. Jemilah Mahmood (2013) is a medical doctor and fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. She is also an outstanding teacher with a reservoir of knowledge and experience in coaching, teaching and motivating people to give back to society.

Dr. Achyuta Samanta (2015)  is a man of a thousand dreams. With faith and beliefs strongly rooted on right effort, he works for a genuinely worthy social cause, and success inevitably follows. He is the founder of Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences and Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology. His dream was to ensure that poverty would never pose a hindrance to anyone’s education. He accelerated efforts to create a slice of heaven on earth, and called it the Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences.

The Children’s Cancer Hospital Egypt — popularly known as Hospital 57357 (2017) — is the ultimate example of what can be achieved when people work together for the common good.

The Edhi Foundation (2019) is Pakistan’s largest charity foundation known worldwide for its humanitarian work. It serves human beings from all races, religions and nationalities without distinction

Dr Sanduk Ruit is the fifth laureate of ISA Award for 2021-2022

He was selected by board of trustees from among the 139 applicants from around the world working in the field of education, health, community service, the alleviation of poverty, and other humanitarian-related fields.

He was selected for the award for his outstanding work in the field of eye care through the Nepal Eye Program -Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology with exemplary work of social entrepreneurship to uplift the quality of eye care services at the same time with inexpensive means and innovation of cheaper intra-ocular lenses to be kept inside the eyes after cataract surgery.

2.    A gold medal

Deadlines for the award

1.    Nomination form are filled and submitted

2.    Nominees are shortlisted by a selected committee of experts in the January of even year (2020, 2022, 2024) for the award of the next odd year

3.    Applications are invited from the nominees until 30th June

4.    Candidates are shortlisted

5.    The expert committee will submit the recommendation to the trustees by 13 july

6.    Award winner is announced on the January of 17 of odd year

Entry Criteria for the awards:

1.     The nomination forms must be submitted in either English or Arabic.

2.     The applicant shall not be less than 18 years of age.

3.     Only those applications that comply with the official nomination criteria shall be approved.

4.     The award will cover areas that include disaster prevention and relief, education, community service, dialogue among civilisations, human tolerance, international peace, urban development, environment and climate change, scientific innovation or poverty alleviation.

5.     The humanitarian project objective must be clearly defined.

6.     The details of the quality and quantity of the targeted category must be clearly outlined.

7.     The form must include the precise humanitarian impact of the project and its underlying benefits to society.

8.     Facing the challenges for the service of humanity must be outlined.

9.     The Secretariat shall notify the candidates in writing that their applications have been received.

1.    Evaluation of the application, performance

2.    field visit of the expertise designated by the board of trustees
