Youtube has, now, changed the audio-visual scenario of the world. It is now developing itself into the megabanks of video collection which surpasses all the available options of the world when it comes to video. It is more comfy than a TV for which you have to wait for the assigned schedule of the program. Every movie, TV program or broadcast has to incorporate youtube for promo, increased viewership in respect of which the success is calculated. Successful youtube users are nowadays called youtubers. 

The more the number of viewers, the more a video is labeled successful; and hence the revenue. Some people are simply amazed while knowing that youtube can make you money, more bewildered when they know that there are few Nepalese passionate youtube vloggers, who earn upto five hundred thousand Nepali rupees in cash a month. In the world, youtube video with largest number of viewership is ‘despacito” song of Luis Fonsi that features Daddy Yankee. The viewers are more than 3.4 billion and counting up by seconds. This has defeated the records of ‘see you again’ song by Wiz Khalifa featuring Charlie Puth. The topmost youtube vloggers (video-bloggers!) of the world are PewDiePie, Jake Paul, Tanner Fox, PopularMMO, Shay Carl, Casey Neistat, Logan Paul, etc.

With this general information, I want to take you to the journey about how one can earn money through youtube. As most of these things are based upon my personal experience, I think this is not just theory that one should rote, but, in fact, is something learnt by doing.

STEP I

You should have a gmail account, when you have it you already have youtube account. You can also update your profiles under your own youtube account. Your account page should appear like below:

NB: The images might appear blurry due to their small size, you can always click to the image and see it enlarged.

STEP II

As soon as you have youtube account, you can upload your video right away by pressing the ‘upload’ button that is seen at the upper right area of the screen. Newbie can upload short videos, but when you keep on with the youtube, then longer videos with the duration of more than 15 minutes can also be uploaded.

STEP III

Once you upload your videos, then it’s online. You just have to wait until the number of viewers is 10,000. Oh, yes here is the tricky part, and now you can see the money is not easy because not a normal video ( or videos of the whole channel) can have 10, 000 viewers. So, here are few facts to have more viewership:

·        The content of the video should be very good, so that the viewership goes on expanding by hearsay or social media sharing

·        Video quality should be high-end. If you upload 1080ps then viewers will have maximum choices of qualities for watching. Meaning: if one has high-end device with fast internet then they can watch in Full HD, or if someone has simple device then s/he can watch with merely 144p. It’s about range of choices which can encompass broad audiences.

·        While you keep a title, select key-words that are most potentially used in the search. But be aware: don’t mislead your viewers. The title should match the video content. For example, when your video is entitled, “the most dangerous creature of nature”, and if in your content normal caterpillars or cats are depicted, then clearly, it’s misleading. Even if they watch it once, they will be forever gone from your channel, which otherwise would be your potential subscribers. So, instead you could have used, ‘Amazing caterpillars’ or “my naughty pet cat”. It’s good to have a normal topic if you have delivered qualitative content. If you have maintain the quality, sooner or later viewers would go on increasing.

·        Nowadays, to magnetize more and more viewers, singing cover song has been a meme. You can use this idea of singing a cover song of already popular songs, or its variant like a parody or a mash-up.  But for this also; number one, you should be or have a good vocalist, number two, expertise in orchestrating musical instruments or knowledge of basic technologies for videography. Also, by default all over the world, prank videos are popular and they get more viewers easily. You can try involving few of your friends to the team.

·        Grasping the opportunity by taking over what is viral at the moment: if something is going viral currently you can use the same idea or pattern to make your video with similar keywords so that once people search with the keywords then your video will be displayed along the search results.

·        Knowledge of video-editing and mixing is always a plus. If you have drone camera, then flyover video or aerial footage of natural panorama or skyscrapers would be enthralling. But be acquainted to the fact that not every place offers freedom to use drone camera. 

·        You can use social media platforms to reach to more people and make your friends ambassadors for the publicity. 

How to customize the thumbnail of Youtube Videos?

·        There is a saying, “a book is not judged by its cover”, but youtube videos are many a time judged by the one. Because, while browsing over the feeds, if the thumbnails of the videos are enticing then there are more chances one clicks and enters your video than the other similar videos. So, put an attractive thumbnail, and by editing the cover picture you can even overwrite the video with the title. Follow the steps to customize the thumbnail:

o   After you sign in to your youtube account, click on your picture that appears at the top right of the screen, then creator studioà Video Manager. Click on “Edit” at the next of the video.

o   On the left side of the preview screen, choose one thumbnail from the lists of pictures from your videos

o   Or, you can even put the thumbnail picture from the outside source by uploading a picture clicking ‘custom thumbnail’. Though the recommended image should be of 1280 X 720, you can upload as higher resolution an image so long as the file size does not exceed 2MB space. Even if you are not so expert in manipulating an image through photoshop, then you can easily do it through bunch of available URL that offers in-site custom photo editing. Examples are Canva, PicMonkey; but don't forget to resize your photo-frame to 1920 X 1080 for full cover. 

STEP IV

So, once your channel reaches 10, 000 public views then you can monetize it, and then apply for Google Adsense account to get approval. This is possible by applying youtube partner program through the Creator Studio.

Okay, don’t be depressed; story does not end here. If you are ever aspirant to be a vlogger, here are some ideas: make your friends residing abroad do it for you. But leave it, then again you can do it all by yourself. If one day, you really are going to be an online celebrity no hurdle can stop you.

In the channel subheading, go to the last option--> Advanced. 

So, here make a clever step: just change the country name where this partner program or whatever the hell it is, is available. Best is to select a country which is nearby. For Nepal, India is the better option. Except for this, your account information should be as accurate as it is possible.

Save your work at the bottom of the page. 

After few hours, sometimes days, there is new option available under channel subheading: Monetization (see the red background)

Under monetization, your account status should be: Monetization enabled. If it's not like that then, go to Status and Features.

Important: All these activities that we are undertaking comes under "creator Studio' so, mind that it is only possible when you have a PC, because these are web-based modifications and mobile 'youtube' app does not have creator studio options. It does have only 'uploads' option. If you want to do these things in a smartphone, you can separately download 'youtube creator studio' app. 

Coming back to where we were, there are list of features, the fifth one is monetization, click 'enable'.  

You can see the performance of your channel through "Analytics". See how much you have earned daily. The picture below is the first day of my acceptance to the partner program.

STEP V

Sometimes, if monetization has not been set default to the uploader, then you can't earn money even if you got the enough views. So, to check which video is monetized and which one is not, just go to:

Creator Studio --> Video Manager --> Videos

There you can see the lists of the videos. And there are four different columns at the right side of the videos, first one is iconized as $. 

If the dollar icon is active (green), then the video is making money for you, and if it's not green or active, it is not. 

To activate monetization, click the icon and you are forwarded to see this page:

Click, "monetize with ads", and now you are shown the ad format options:

You can check the multiple options from the available three. Don't forget to hit, "save changes". Don't rush it take few more seconds before the changes are saved, so don't navigate to other pages until it says, 'All changes saved', from "Your changes are being saved."

Now when you go to the previous page (video manager --> Videos), the same video is having a dollar icon that is green. 

STEP VI

So, now you are almost done with the money making business. Your video goes on acquiring more and more views. Soon as you upload a video you can monetize as per the above instructions. While you can do it with any other video, but once the viewers are really growing to a particular video, then you can consider enhancing it. 

Video Enhancement of the Youtube Video

When you are in creator Studio --> Video Manager --> Video, you can see a drop down button next to the "edit" button as below:

In the drop-down button, click the "enhancements." 

This page offers you the basic video-editing options. For bright and color you can manually adjust the four options: Full light, contrast, saturation, cool temperature. If you are not sure how to do it, just click "auto-fix" above. One can insert the suitable 'filters' and 'blurring effects' to the video. You can search in the page where it is. If you image is quite shaky, click "stabilize". With 'Slow Motion' you can slow down the video (choose which one option is appropriate for you), with 'Time Lapse', you can fast-forward the video. Just below you can see three options, trim (cut the video to your desired length, rotate 'clock' and anti-clock'.

'Save' the changes. It take times to come into effect, if it's a long video then it may take hours. 

How to add subtitles to the Youtube video?

If your video is not in English language, or the spoken English does not offers native tone, then you can interpolate subtitles, by clicking subtitles/cc on the same page just at the right-top. For that you have to set the primary language of the video and proceed. You can upload the already made subtitles, if you have. If not, then just go on typing the relevant text in the boxes given at the left side. According to the voices spoken in the video, this offers you the choices to type in the exactly calculated time, you have to sync the voice and text, maybe with repeated playing of the video at the preview screen to the right. 

If you incorporate widely spoken language to your video as subtitles, it's likely that more people would like to watch it.

STEP VII

Open account in Google Adsense

Go to google.com/adsense and open your adsense account with the same gmail address that you did use while opening youtube account. While you can observe your estimated earnings (estimated ad revenue and youtube red revenue) in the analytics portion of the creator studio, your finalized earning will not be transferred to your adsense account until the mid of next month, so keep your fingers crossed. 



Few Important Facts:

• Your income depends upon the views, yes; But more upon the ads that requires a click, so just don’t forget to check ‘skippable video ads’ in ads format.

• For the same number of viewers, the income level of a video can differ. That means if your video is watched by 20k Asians, your revenue will be lower than if it were watched by same number of Americans or Australians. So, try to make video in English, try to attract more viewers from western world.

• You can only have your payment once the revenue is $100.

• Be aware: don't copy the video or portion of another video. If you do it you have to add extra information, voice or video-clips. You can't monetize a video which has got already copyrighted contents: video or song. The main theme of youtube policy is: the new videos should be as fresh and original as they could be. 

Money goes on increasing in number. So, people don't believe and say that that's just the number. It has no meaning however amount increases on that number unless you can have it in your hand. For 'How to cash the collected Adsense money" wait for my next blog. I will share my real experience!
